Start with the decisions users need to make
Choose widgets that help users continue their work or understand what has changed. An interesting number that does not support a decision may not belong on the dashboard.
Help returning users understand what has changed and what they need to do next.
Review progress
Understand the numbers before deciding what to do.
Return to work and handle tasks that need attention.
Distinguish loading, missing data, and loading errors.
Make the dashboard usable for different roles and input methods.
Progress is saved automatically in this browser.
GUIDANCE
Choose widgets that help users continue their work or understand what has changed. An interesting number that does not support a decision may not belong on the dashboard.
Change the date range, role, or filter, then check every related area. Distinguish zero values, missing data, and data that failed to load.
Show the error in the affected area and offer a retry. Keep the rest of the dashboard visible when its data is still reliable.
If widgets can be reordered, support keyboard operation and restoring the layout. A clear fixed layout may be sufficient for a screen with fixed tasks.
EXAMPLES
Start with 8 orders that need processing today, 2 orders approaching their deadline, and a “View orders to process” button. Show the comparison period and update time for the past 7 days of data.
Keep the order list usable while the revenue widget shows “Data could not be loaded” and a retry button. Do not replace an error with zero revenue.
